“101 Gadgets That Changed the World,” a two-hour special on the evolution of technology and its impact on society, premieres 8 p.m. June 15 on the History channel.
Editors from Popular Mechanics and a panel of other experts will rank the most influential inventions of the past 200 years and detail some historically significant storie behind them. For example, the common household blender, essential for making a proper green smoothie, helped Jonas Salk create the polio vaccine. And the humble safety razor, while useful for a close shave, saved lives during World War I by helping soldiers remove their facial hair so gas masks would fit properly.
The History channel says Popular Mechanics assembled a group of leading technology specialists to generate a “definitive list of high-impact innovations,” including the magazine’s editor-in-chief Jim Meigs and senior technology editor Glenn Derene and Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
